Finn Myrstad, Director of Consumer Policy at the Norwegian Consumer Council, has been awarded the Mozilla Rise 25 Award. The award is given to individuals who contribute to a more ethical, responsible, and inclusive internet.
Finn Myrstad is one of the 25 awardees, which include artists, activists, content creators, and service developers. The prize was presented in connection with Mozilla’s 25th anniversary on October 13th.
The award is given in recognition of the Norwegian Consumer Council’s work related to privacy, deceptive design, and security in internet-connected products, which among other things has led to stricter regulation of surveillance-based advertising in Europe, contributed to the EU’s Cyber Resilience Act, and a new cybersecurity law in California. Additionally, Amazon has removed deceptive designs for all users in the EU after an action by the Consumer Council.
The Consumer Council has also worked closely in alliance and coordination with consumer groups across the world, in particular with members of BEUC (the European Consumer Organisation), The Transatlantic Consumer Dialogue (TACD, where Myrstad is the co-chair of the digital committee) and Consumers International.
«It’s incredibly inspiring that the work of the Consumer Council is noticed and appreciated far beyond Norway’s borders. Our work has been used in policy development in the EU and elsewhere, and it’s particularly satisfying that our highly skilled and dedicated colleague, Finn Myrstad, has received this award. He certainly doesn’t work alone but has built a strong team within our organization over time.» says Inger Lise Blyverket, executive director of the Norwegian Consumer Council.
«The award is a great recognition of the work we’ve put into ensuring consumer protection in a time when is becoming increasingly digital. Many deserve credit for this, both within the Consumer Council and among our partners in Europe and the United States,» says Finn Myrstad.
Mozilla is a nonprofit organization working to promote an open and safe internet. Mozilla is known for its web browser, Firefox, and is committed to protecting privacy, promoting open-source software, and giving users more control over their digital lives.
The event took place Friday evening in Berlin. Video of the award ceremony can be seen here.
